Dining Out More

We haven't been away during the Winter. Instead we have both been working hard and keeping up with friends in Melbourne while sampling more of the restaurants here. Finally the days are getting longer and it is light by the time I leave for work.

At St Vincent's I have been working regularly with a Thai anaesthetist for almost a year. Dr Pipatsattayanuwong was with me regularly for my Friday morning orthopaedics list and learned techniques for femoral and sciatic nerve blocks. As she was returning to Thailand we took her to dinner at Shark Fin House for her farewell.

We had dinner with the rest of the anaesthetists in my private group at Jacques Reymond and Jay had the opportunity to meet a few more of them that he hadn't met at the previous dinners. Our other friends we dragged along to the Argonauts rowing club Trivia Night at St Kilda Town Hall. We had our own table and of course we didn't win, but the club raised funds which have helped pay for two new boats which have been ordered.

Most of the rest of the rowing club went to Copenhagen for the OutGames while we had our own little regatta at the same time followed by a casual ceremony with the awarding of chocolate medals at Graze.

Jay's work moved office to a new place a little further down St Kilda Road which has a great view over the rowing club and the lake to the bay. They released a game to accompany the new Transformers movie and they are still busy with several other titles. Video games are doing well in the economic downturn.

Our friend Jay from San Francisco came to visit in July with his boyfriend Willie. Jay is planning to move to Australia so we had to show him the cultural highlights of Melbourne. We went to the Essendon v Collingwood match on Friday night at the MCG and the Dali exhibition on Saturday morning. On Sunday they tried the Belgian spoil at Koko Black.

Jay's birthday was at the end of July. He wanted to get an iPhone as they have been very popular here. At my regular case-presentation dinner at Kenzan, there are usually eight iPhones among ten anaesthetists. He decided on the 32Gb iPhone GS and has been very happy with it. For dinner on his birthday we went to Cutler & Co which had received very positive reviews. It certainly lived up to its reputation.

Our friends Tuong and Simon are expecting twins through a surrogacy arrangement. When it looked as though the babies were going to arrive unexpectedly early, they organized a baby shower in anticipation. We hadn't been to a baby shower before and this was somewhat atypical since the mother is in California and so wasn't present. Fortunately the scare did not turn into premature labour and they hope to make it to mid-September before delivery.

The most exciting thing to happen in the Docklands development in Melbourne this year was the giant ferris wheel turning out to have serious engineering defects and be dangerous. The second most exciting this was the opening of Costco this week. Inside it is laid out the same as every other Costco but it is the first in Australia and gives us a welcome opportunity to buy some things which are otherwise hard to find in Australia. Now we have somewhere to buy the finger food for our belated housewarming.

After I was asked about the graffiti visible from our bedroom, I photographed some of the more striking examples within a block or two of the house and made an online gallery.

The Winter has been mild and we have not had much rain, so the water restrictions continue. It has been very pleasant for walking in the Exhibition Gardens near our house and there has been enough rain that the grass is green again. In October I am planning to visit New Orleans for a conference. I will be travelling via Los Angeles and will visit Jay's sister's family in Burbank. We are also planning another vacation soon as the Winter has seemed very long.
